Meeting Notes

Region 10 college representatives met at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel to share information about the Multimedia and Entertainment Initiative.

Cynthia Scott, Director of the Multimedia and Entertainment Initiative grant, greeted the attendees and set the tone for the upbeat agenda’s activities for this event.

Following lunch, Eric Meline of Aquent was introduced as an expert on the job market for the types of students typically involved in Multimedia and Entertainment training programs. Aquent is the world’s largest provider of contract and permanent marketing and creative talent, on hourly, permanent, or project basis.

Mr. Meline discussed some of the in-demand skill sets after predicting that the hiring of multimedia talent will increase in 2004. Web designers, print traffic managers and project management skills will continue to be in demand. Information architects for web site front end perspectives will be sought.

For print design and production, Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator are the current standards. InDesign is growing in popularity. Designers are needed in both InDesign and QuarkXPress. Mac OSX continues to be the designer’s platform of preference.

For web design and production, HTML (hand coding and Dreamweaver), Flash MX with Action Scripting and Photoshop for web graphics will be in demand.

Talent will be sought for those who are proficient with multimedia design, animation and editing skills in Flash MX, Final Cut Pro, Premiere, Maya, Studio 3D, After Effects and Lightwave. Writers and marketing people will be in demand who know how to provide online help, create advertising copy and provide web content skills.

Mr. Meline emphasized job search strategies that included researching the job market, exploiting one’s niche, networking, creating a “killer portfolio” with a focused presentation, and communication skills. He concluded with a recommendation to develop skills that span the entire spectrum of media, from print to web.

Region 10 educators and guests announced their local entrepreneur and innovator success stories.

Participants at each table developed ideas of future trends through sharing their knowledge and experiences. Spokespersons presented the predictions.

The Council meeting concluded with some announcements, including exam voucher request forms for instructors who wish to be certified on multimedia applications, which were due March 1, 2004.
