Thank you for participating in the 2006 Regional Industry Advisory Council Meeting for the Multimedia & Entertainment Initiative. Within the California Community College system, Region 10 includes San Diego and Imperial Valley Counties. The community colleges served by this industry advisory council meeting include:  MiraCosta College, Palomar College, San Diego Miramar College, San Diego Mesa College, San Diego City College, San Diego Continuing Education, Cuyamaca College, Grossmont College, Southwestern College, Imperial Valley College. The purpose of this meeting was community college instructors and students, industry leaders, high school teacher and students to give a real-world snapshot of their industry perspectives to each other.

The meeting was held on 2006 at the DoubleTree Hotel, Hazard Center, San Diego, CA on Thursday April 20, 2006 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The meeting began with greetings and a chance for community college educators from throughout the region to meet colleagues from other colleges and mix with regional industry members.

Doug Elliot, Interim Placement Coordinator for SDCCD Continuing Education called the meeting to order with an introduction and explained the intent to connect newly created small high schools with community colleges and industries.  Note: There are three digital media-related high schools in San Diego City Schools.  He proceeded to introduce Jack White, Producer and well-known retired newscaster who presented a magic trick, hence, the theme of “The Magic of Media.”

Doug Elliot introduced Thomas Powell, owner of PINT, Inc., a website development firm in San Diego, CA.  He effectively presented his opinions on the effects to society of technology followed by a look into the future of what might be expected.

Doug Elliot then introduced teachers and 4 10th grade students from the School of New Media & Design, Kearny High Educational Complex, San Diego City Schools, one of 14 new small high schools created from 3 large, urban campuses.  The students displayed a project that involved several subject-matter disciplines to produce a campaign to help raise funds for Leukemia patients at St. Jude’s Hospital.  They presented their PowerPoint, brochure, webpage and public service announcement video that they produced as a team.

A panel presentation followed, moderator by Jack White with panel members Thomas Powell, President, Pint, Inc., Lynda Weinman, Lynda.com and Brent Altomare, Executive Producer, Groovy Like a Movie.

Within the table packets for each participant was the latest issue of the MEI Newsletter, a copy of the SDCCD North City class offerings brochure, a recent article by John Avakian, the Statewide Director for MEI, and the MEI Mission Statement.
